Group Therapy - Adult
What is it?
The sessions, as in individual therapy aim at the personal growth of group members. Group therapy is different to individual therapy in two ways: 1. each member is not only supported by the therapist but also by the rest of the group members, 2. there is constant feedback as to how the behaviour of each member affects the others. Therefore the group acts as a miniature of our social life outside the group and all members have continuous chances to understand much better the effect they have on others in order to resolve any difficulties that often appear in their communication and interactions, as well as to identify recurring patterns in their behaviour. Because of the importance of a trustful therapist – client relationship, as well as the readiness of the client, it is usually suggested that the client is first prepared in a few individual sessions before entering a group.
Duration: The duration of group therapy is not specific and the factors that determine it are the theme and the target of the group. If the group is ‘closed’ then it has a specific theme, number of sessions and members. If the group is ‘open’ there is no specific theme, the sessions can go on for several years and gradually some members may exit the group and new members may enter the group.
